Congleton is a town that has never been short of character. Settlements here date back to Neolithic times, and above the town a chambered tomb known as ‘The Bridestones’ was constructed around 4,500 years ago. By the medieval period it had become a busy and spirited market town, and in 1272 it was granted a charter giving townspeople the right to have a mayor, and even an ale taster to check the quality of local ale.

Congleton is perhaps best known for its wonderfully eccentric nickname. Known locally as "Beartown," the story goes that in the 1620s when the town used money saved to buy a new bible to purchase a bear for bearbaiting instead. Congleton’s bear unfortunately died ahead of the Wakes, which was like a carnival, and during the Wakes, a lot of the entertainment was around the bear baiting.
The town were saving up to buy a new bible, and the town council at the time agreed that the bear warden could have the money that was in the coffers for the bible to buy a new bear!
“Congleton Rare, Congleton Rare, sold the Bible to buy a bear.”
Today, you will find many bears and bear references around the town, following the popular Bearmania project, where 65 bears were adopted by local businesses and organisations, as well as bear shaped hedges on our roundabouts. You can even enjoy a beer brewed by Beartown Brewery, in the Bears Den!
It speaks of a town that has always had its own way of doing things, its own independent spirit.
That same spirit runs through the families we support in Congleton today. People who have lived and worked in this town for decades, who have their own routines, their own preferences, their own way of life and who deserve care that respects every bit of that.
For us, Congleton isn't just an area we cover, it's home. Rachael, our director, is Congleton born and bred, and has been delivering care in and around the town since 2002. Our Registered Manager, Vicky, began her own career back in 2007 as a carer, working right here in Congleton, building relationships and making a difference to the people of the town.Vicky's journey from carer to Registered Manager is a testament to the values at the heart of our organisation that great care starts with people who genuinely care.
When Vicky visits a client in Congleton today, she's not a stranger to the town. She knows it. She's part of it. And that's exactly how we believe home care should feel.
At Ablewell Care, we believe home care should feel like a natural part of your day, not an intrusion into it. Our carers take time to understand the people they visit, their stories, their preferences, the little things that matter. Whether it's a morning routine, a trip out, or simply some friendly company over a cup of tea, we're here to help life feel as normal and comfortable as possible.
If someone you love in Congleton needs a little extra support at home, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're not just local, we're neighbours!
